CONTEXT
The project was primarily initiated in response to the housing loss caused by the massive floods of 2018 in Kerala, India. However, the selected project area is unique: situated on the banks of a natural backwater where water levels are typically lower than the mean sea level. Due to Kerala’s two distinct rainy seasons, this area experiences flooding ranging from 60cm to 90cm up to four times a year.
FLOODS: Using a unique system of creating Ferro cement wall panels, first by prefabrication and then plastered at the site. The walls are constructed using 40mm Ferro cement panels measuring 9 feet wide by 8 feet high. This design effectively manages the lateral force of floodwaters.
SITE ACCESS: The intervention area has limited road access, with transport primarily reliant on country boats. To overcome this challenge, a modular design system was implemented. The raised foundation is composed of prefabricated elements that can be transported by boat and assembled on-site using cement grouting.
